XBox Update Bricked your console?

Date December 12, 2006

In response to a wall of silence from Microsoft, an unhappy Xbox customer has set up a web site where anyone whose favorite games console has been bricked by a recent software update can add their name:

http://www.xbox360defective.com/index.php

He is one of a growing number of angry gamers frustrated at the way Microsoft are ignoring the scale of the problem. If the comments over at the xbox.com forums are anything to go by, Microsoft’s attitude to their paying customers will do more for sales of the Wii and the PS3 than any ad campaign:

I really hope that, behind the scenes, Microsoft are frantically working on a fix because the longer they try to ignore this, the more damage they’ll do to the good reputation that XBox360 was building.

I’ve just bought Rainbow Six Vegas and Microsoft ‘kindly’ informed me to update about 10 mins ago. I did and now my 9 month old Xbox 360 has crashed and won’t play any games! What can I do? Can anyone help?

Are you getting the three red lights? If you’re in the UK, you will be covered by the Sale of Goods Act. Take your console back to where you got it and they’re obliged to replace it. My retailer – Game – even let me keep my hard disk so I didn’t lose my game saves. If you’re in the US or Canada, I think you have to call Microsoft’s toll-free number and arrange for a return – the downside there is that I’m pretty sure you have to send your hard disk back, too. Good luck – and let us know how you get on.
